2002 - ANTIQUE FURNITURE IN MALTA

Patrimonju's 11th exhibition entitled Antique Furniture in Malta, held at St James Cavalier, featured a stunning selection of items of furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries. The items on display were carefully selected to show the evolution of furniture in Malta, as well as the various styles adopted by Maltese craftsmen, some of which reflect other European styles. Others are in what has become the very distinctive Maltese style. The exhibition, which showed some of Malta's finest pieces of furniture, included chests of drawers, bureaux, tables, chairs and cupboards to mention a few. Style and decoration varied from the plain and solid earlier pieces, to the intricate inlay and artistic forms of the later ones. Accompanying the furniture was a splendid selection of paintings and other objets d'art from the related periods, which enhanced the artistic mastery and atmosphere of splendor.
A full colour catalogue raisonné complemented the exhibition.
