- The Dghajsa and Other
Traditional Maltese
Boats
Malta's natural deep-sea harbour has since day immemorial, attracted
mariners visiting the island, transporting provisions or seeking refuge.
Furthermore being a sea-fearing country we have developed an age-old tradition
of boat typologies that have become part of our cultural heritage.
'The Dghajsa & Other Traditional Maltese Boats' directly captures and
puts on record part of our maritime heritage which is in eminent danger
of being lost. The publication not only provides insight to the various
remaining specimens but also analyses the lost harbour crafts reproduced
in photographs and paintings by artists such as the Shranz brothers, Cali,
Caruana Dingli and Girolamo Gianni. The author also provides an extensive
Glossary of Maltese nautical terms and a study on the historical racing
event of the 8th September Regatta.
Joseph Muscat is a maritime historian and author of The Maltese Galley
and The Maltese Vaxxel
