1995 - 'THE SILVER OF MALTA'

Maltese silver is an important part of the country's patrimony and is much sought after by collectors in international auction rooms. This fourth Patrimonju exhibition displayed more than 1500 artefacts of Maltese silverware in the splendid setting of the 'Throne Room' of the Presidential Palace. These unique domestic pieces were magnificent examples of the Maltese silversmiths' art.

With the arrival in Malta of The Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem and the flourishing of the baroque style in the building of churches, palaces and patrician homes, the Maltese silver industry emerged to produce some of Europe's finest ware. The exhibition attracted international interest and successfully combined the presentation of the evolution of the silver craftsmanship in Malta, giving an insight into the art of civilised living.

The 'Silver of Malta' catalogues accompanied the exhibition in both hardbound and limp editions.

'Silver and Banqueting' in Malta - a collection of nine essays in hardbound edition connects various subjects to do with silver, published to complement the exhibition.
