This exhibition was organised in collaboration with the Istituto di Sociologia Luigi Sturzo of Caltagirone, Sicily, and held at St James Cavalier in Valletta. Most of the 115 exquisite objects on display were apothecary vessels commissioned and imported by the Knights of the Order of St John for their Sacra Infermeria. These colourful and vibrant vessels were used to preserve medicinal concoctions, plant roots and ointments, and were mainly decorated with flowers, fruits and religious representations. Some also feature emblems of Grand Masters under whose reign they were commissioned.

These maiolica jars were kindly loaned for exhibition by the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Cathedral Museum in Mdina, the Wignacourt Museum in Rabat and various private collectors.

Through the initiative of the Italian Cultural Institute in Malta, this exhibition also travelled to Ragusa and Caltagirone in Sicily, from where some of these pieces originated. This exhibition was also set up in The Hague, and was complemented by a bilingual catalogue in English and Italian.
